How to Delete Apps From Your Apple TV
Apps are a big part of using the Apple TV. Whether you want to stream a movie, watch a TV show or play a game, you need to open an app on Apple’s streaming box.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to an app you no longer need, we’re here to show you how to delete apps on your Apple TV.
How to Delete Apps on the Apple TV Main Screen
The first and easiest way to remove the Apple TV app is through the main Home screen.
To start, find the app you want to remove and scroll down with the Siri Remote until it’s highlighted. With the 2nd generation Siri Remote, press and hold the clickpad center. On first generation models, press and hold the touch surface.
The app icon will start playing. On either version of the remote, select the Play/Pause button. Several options will appear on the screen. Select Delete.
You will need to select Delete one more time to confirm the action.
One thing to note is that when deleting the app, it will also be deleted from any other Apple TVs that may be using your iCloud home screen setup.
When deleting an app, all data associated with it will also be permanently deleted from the Apple TV. You can easily reinstall an app from the App Store, but that data cannot be recovered. So, for example, there will be no progress in a game or downloaded TV show.
How to remove Apple TV apps from Settings
And in addition to better organizing your Apple TV, deleting apps will free up space on the set-top box for additional content.
To find the apps that are taking up the most storage on your Apple TV, select the Settings app from the Home screen. After that select General and Manage Storage.
The apps will be shown in the order of how much space they take up on the Apple TV. Find the app you want to remove and select the trash can icon.
Select Remove on the next screen to finish removing the app from your Apple TV. As with the first method, deleting apps this way will also remove them from any other Apple TVs that use your iCloud home screen. All data will also be permanently deleted.
how to hide apple tv apps
Alternatively, to clean up your Apple TV home screen without deleting the app, you can place it in a folder or with several other apps.
To do so, select an app from the Home screen, and the same menu to remove an app brings up. Instead of choosing Delete, choose New Folder to create a new folder. In the same menu, you can also choose to move the app to a previously created folder.
If you have a second- or third-generation Apple TV, you can only hide apps. Do this by selecting the Settings app and then Main Menu. In the list of apps, select Apps, and then Hide. This same menu will also allow you to unhide an app from the home screen.
Unlike deleting an app, hiding an app will not delete any data associated with it.
Streamline your Apple TV experience better
Even though deleting apps on your Apple TV isn’t as easy as on an iPhone or iPad, Apple offers two methods to accomplish the task.
Removing apps you don’t want or need can better customize your Apple TV home screen to make the experience even better.
